FaceCast records both sides of an interview at full quality, on each person's own phone. The call is only how you talk to each other. What you keep is recorded locally, so it is not damaged by a weak connection.
Inviting a guest
Start an interview and share the six-character room code, or send the link the app offers. Your guest can join from the FaceCast app, or straight from their browser with nothing to install. Codes avoid characters people mishear, so reading one out loud over the phone works.
Where are my recordings?
On your phone, in the app's library. To get them somewhere else:
- Save to Photos from the take screen, then share as usual.
- Files app → On My iPhone → FaceCast, which is also how AirDrop to a Mac and dragging into an editor work.
- Export from the editor for a finished, captioned video.
The app closed in the middle of a recording
Open FaceCast again. Recordings are written so that they stay playable even when the app does not get to close them, and anything that was interrupted is picked up on the next launch and marked Recovered in the library. Up to the last couple of seconds may be missing; everything before that is there.
My AirPods sound like a phone call
Bluetooth microphones can run at two very different qualities, and the low one sounds like a telephone. FaceCast asks for the full-bandwidth link when your earbuds support it, and the chip at the top of the call screen says which one you are on. If it says the sound is call quality, the phone's own microphone will sound better. Tap the chip, or the microphone button, to switch during the call.
For the best recording of all, wear headphones. FaceCast turns off echo cancellation when it can hear that you are, and what reaches the file is then what the microphone actually heard.
The call will not connect
Both people need a working internet connection, and both need to allow camera and microphone access. Some office and hotel networks block direct connections between devices; switching one side to mobile data or a different network usually gets past it. If a call drops mid-interview, FaceCast rebuilds it automatically and your recording keeps running throughout.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything works without one, and your recordings are on your phone either way. If you did make an account and want it gone, Settings → Delete account closes it immediately. That does not delete your recordings, which are files on your device.
Permissions FaceCast asks for
- Camera and microphone: to appear in the call and to record your side of it.
- Local network: so two devices on the same WiFi can connect directly, which is faster and free.
- Speech recognition: for captions, run entirely on your device.
- Photos: only to save a finished video when you ask for one.
Still stuck?
Email mat@mismi.co.uk. It helps to say which iPhone you are on, what iOS version, and roughly when the interview was. With that we can usually work out what happened.
